The Trump administration is expanding Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detention capacity by converting warehouses into new detention centers.

The Department of Homeland Security plans to renovate eight existing structures into facilities capable of holding 7,000 to 10,000 additional detainees.

Defense contractor KVG LLC received a $113.1 million contract for a Maryland facility, and security contractor GardaWorld Federal Services LLC secured a $313.4 million contract for an Arizona center.

These contracts were awarded to companies with limited prior experience in directly managing immigrant detention centers for ICE, drawing skepticism from established industry leaders.

The projects are part of a larger $38.3 billion initiative to support Trump’s immigration crackdown, with completion expected within a year but potentially extending to 2029.
