It is the ‘worst thing that could happen to the NFL’ and something that everyone ‘hates,’ but Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has nonetheless ruined the 2025 season by proposing to girlfriend Taylor Swift, according to irate fans on social media.
Responding to a congratulatory post from the league remarking on the couple’s ‘journey,’ critics bombarded the post with responses ranging from indifferent (‘who cares?’) to furious.
‘Stop throwing this down our face,’ one critic wrote online. ‘You posted this bs like 20 times already.’
That was an exaggeration, but the NFL’s Instagram account did have no fewer than four Kelce-Swift posts as of Tuesday afternoon on the East Coast.
For critics, that’s response from the league is further proof that the ubiquitous Kelce-Swift coverage of the last few years will only continue for the foreseeable future.
‘Can we just watch football?’ one fan asked. ‘Serious question.’
This is not the way some football fans wanted to start the 2025 NFL regular season

Not every fan is looking to start the season with a marriage proposal, it turned out

Many fans have felt as though the couple has been unavoidable since getting together
‘Nobody hopes he retires soon more then NFL fans,’ another added.
There were some ‘heart’ emojis and other attempts at humanity, but those messages were diminished by the wave of kvetching among football diehards.
‘Bruh stop with this s***,’ wrote on critic.
Another added: ‘The world kept spinning.’
There is even a chance Swift is invited to perform at halftime of this year’s Super Bowl, where Kelce could once again be playing for the Chiefs.
According to odds from BetOnline.ag shared on X, Swift holds a sizable lead at the top of the most-recently updated odds – ahead of Dua Lipa at 7/1, and Sabrina Carpenter at 8/1.
Mariah Carey, Miley Cyrus and Oasis are all tied at 10/1, while Billie Eilish, Charli xcx and Jay-Z are at 12/1.

Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, right, is congratulated by Taylor Swift as they celebrate the Chiefs victory over the Buffalo Bills in the AFC Championship last January

One NFL fan thinks this is the worst thing that can happen to the league
In previous years, it was said that Swift didn’t do the halftime show likely because of her brand ambassadorship with Coca-Cola, whom she remained with until 2018. Meanwhile, Pepsi – the soft drink company’s main rival – sponsored the halftime show between 2013 and 2022.
The truth about Swift’s airtime during NFL games is that she usually gets fewer than 30 seconds if she’s even in the stadium, which hasn’t always been the case. This is obviously a fraction of the broadcast, but given the prevalence of online coverage about the couple, fans can feel inundated.
As one wrote Tuesday: ‘I didn’t know she played in the league, oh yeah.. she doesn’t. WE DON’T CARE.’
