Tony Romo has brushed off criticism of his broadcasting during the recent Bills-Jaguars game and revealed he was battling illness while on air.

Buffalo and Jacksonville put on a playoff thriller on Sunday afternoon but CBS analyst Romo came in for heavy criticism during the game.

The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback was branded a ‘complete embarrassment’ while CBS was urged to find a new broadcaster.

It is not the first controversy involving Romo this season and Barstool boss Dave Portnoy claimed: ‘He looks like he’s on drugs or something when he’s calling games.’

Portnoy added: ‘What was he talking about? He started that game up with the most nonsensical rant I’ve ever heard.’

But Romo has now addressed the criticism and revealed illness struck the CBS crew during their trip to Jacksonville.

‘We had a bunch of guys sick but we were just grinding through it… you’re not going to miss a playoff game – it’s too much fun,’ he told SiriusXM.

Romo then suggested he is not fazed by the criticism, insisting it comes with the territory of working on big-game broadcasts.

‘I think anytime you’re in a position we are – we’re on the air for three, three-and-a-half hours – you’re always trying to do the best you can and there’s always going to be moments where there is great stuff and then other stuff,’ he said.

‘It’s just part of being in your position – you just go back to work and do a great job. That’s the fun part about this, it’s sports and it makes it fun.

‘We’re just trying to make everyone enjoy the show and learn a little bit and have a great time. So to me it’s what makes sports amazing – it’s fun!’
