Thomas Tuchel suffers injury blow as England star is forced to withdraw from international duty days before World Cup qualifier

Thomas Tuchel has been hit with a fresh injury blow after an England star was forced to leave the camp days before Tuesday’s World Cup qualifier against Latvia.

England cruised to a 3-0 win over Wales in Friday’s friendly thanks to goals from Aston Villa duo Morgan Rogers and Ollie Watkins and Arsenal superstar Bukayo Saka.

But Tuchel is now one man light heading into the clash with Latvia on Tuesday after a defender suffered a knee injury and returned back to his club.

Former Liverpool star Jarell Quansah, 22, has yet to make his senior debut for England and was left on the bench during the 3-0 win at Wembley.

And now, despite being called up to five separate camps under Tuchel, Lee Carsley and Gareth Southgate, the Bayer Leverkusen defender will have to wait a little longer to make his senior bow.

‘Jarell Quansah will miss England’s forthcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier against Latvia through injury,’ a statement read on Saturday.

‘The Bayer Leverkusen defender returned to his club as a precaution following Thursday’s 3-0 victory over Wales. No further squad additions are planned at this moment in time.’

Marc Guehi and John Stones were named at the heart of defence by Tuchel on Friday, with the Manchester City star replaced midway through the game by Myles Lewis-Skelly.

The substitution saw Ezri Konsa move inside from the right-back position to partner Guehi, while initial left-back Djed Spence switched flanks to allow Lewis-Skelly to play in his natural position.

England will hope to qualify for next summer’s World Cup with two matches to spare by beating Latvia on Tuesday, if results elsewhere in Group K go in their favour.
