The FA are this morning expected to announce that Thomas Tuchel has agreed a deal to continue as England head coach until 2028.

The German’s existing contract was due to expire at the end of the forthcoming World Cup.

However, FA officials have acted following an impressive qualifying campaign and amid concerns that Tuchel may be in the frame for the Manchester United job at the end of the season.

Tuchel is said to be excited over the prospect of leading England not only in the US, Mexico and Canada but also at a ‘home’ European Championship finals in 2028.

The deal, first reported by The Times, would mean he remains in charge of the Three Lions until the end of the tournament, which will be hosted by England, Scotland, Wales and Ireland. Wembley will host the semis and the final.

United have previously spoken to Tuchel, 52, about taking over at Old Trafford.

In the summer of 2024 he was approached with a view to replacing Erik ten Hag, with one meeting taking place with Sir Jim Ratcliffe.

He subsequently ruled himself out of contention but has retained admirers at the club. Michael Carrick is currently in interim charge for the rest of the campaign following the sacking of Ruben Amorim.

Spurs are also looking for a new boss, while Real Madrid are another currently in the market.

Back in November, Tuchel hinted at the possibility of an extended stay, saying the England job had re-energised him.

‘I know from many years in professional and club football what makes me happy and what brings the best out of me,’ he said.

‘I feel re-energised and I love to work with the players and be close to the Premier League. I also know the level of support and trust I have.’

Tuchel will be attending this evening’s Nations League draw in Brussels and is expected to speak about his new deal to the media.

England are in pot three with Serbia, Belgium and Norway and they will feature in a group with one of Portugal, France, Spain or Germany.

The Three Lions will next be in action against Uruguay and Japan, with two friendlies taking place next month.

Tuchel will then name his provisional World Cup squad and they will have two warm-up games before the tournament begins – against New Zealand and Costa Rica.

They start their campaign  on June 17 against Croatia in Dallas.
