Police Scotland said the teenager was found seriously injured on Bath Street, Portobello, at about 18:40 on Friday.
He was taken to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary where he is in a serious but not life threatening condition.
Officers said two of the suspects were masked and left the scene on dark coloured e-bikes.
They are both described as tall, of slim build, wearing dark clothing and black balaclavas.
The third is described as being of stocky build with blonde hair.
Det Insp Dougal Begg said: “We are continuing our inquiries to establish the full circumstances and a police presence will remain in the area.
“We believe this was a targeted attack and I would appeal to anyone who was in the area at the time and who may have information which could assist to contact us.”
