A teenage footballer in Poland is in a critical condition and fighting for his life in hospital after being involved in a car crash which killed his older sister.

Ksawery Jezewski, 17, who plays for Legia Warsaw, was in a vehicle which veered off the road and collided with a tree, tragically claiming the life of his sibling.

The incident took place in Goslice, near the city of Plock in central Poland.

Firefighters, police officers, an ambulance crew and an air ambulance rushed to respond, but the 18-year-old woman died at the scene despite resuscitation attempts.

‘Legia U17 player Ksawery Jezewski is in the hospital in critical condition following a tragic car accident in which his sister passed away,’ a Legia statement said.

‘The board, club staff, teammates, and coaches from the Academy extend their deepest condolences to Ksawery’s parents and share in their grief. We will provide all possible support to our player and his family. Ksawery, the entire club is with you.’

Polish footballer Ksawery Jezewski, 17, is fighting for his life after being involved in a car crash

The police said it has not yet been determined who was behind the wheel.

Early indications suggest that the Toyota had not been speeding before the crash.

‘A Toyota Yaris left the road for unexplained reasons and hit a tree,’ a police spokesperson told Polish newspaper Przeglad Sportowy. ‘The footballer’s 18-year-old sister died at the scene, and the 17-year-old footballer was taken to hospital.

‘The causes of the accident are unknown, but according to initial findings, the vehicle was not moving at high speed.

‘The police have not yet determined who was driving the car.’

Jezewski plays for Legia’s Under-17 side and represented his country in the same category last autumn, playing in two friendly matches against Albania.

The talented striker was previously on the books in Wisla Plock’s academy.
