Team USA issues blunt response to transgender cyclist’s celebrations over Charlie Kirk assassination

Team USA has responded to an American transgender BMX cyclist who shared a series of social media posts celebrating the death of Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, a conservative activist and close ally of Donald Trump, was shot and killed while hosting a Q&A event with students at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. The police now have a suspect, Tyler Robinson, in custody.

The 31-year-old had been debating the issue of mass shootings involving transgender people with a student in the moment before he was shot dead, sending shockwaves across the globe.

Despite many sporting figures condemning the murder, Chelsea Wolfe, who featured as an alternate on the USA’s women’s BMX team at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, openly welcomed the assassination.

Team USA issued a response to Wolfe’s sickening posts on Friday afternoon. They said: ‘The views of current and former national team athletes are their own and do not reflect those of USA Cycling.

‘Chelsea Wolfe has not been a member of the USA Cycling National Team or a member of USA Cycling since 2023.’

Biological male Wolfe’s personal Instagram story was littered with celebratory posts in the wake of Kirk’s death.

One of the posts, which has since expired, featured a report from USA Today on the horrific murder, with an animated caption of children’s cartoon character ‘Dora the Explorer,’ according to Fox News. Above it read: ‘We did it!.’

In another, Wolfe shared a selfie giving a thumbs up with a caption that read: ‘Being a Nazi is completely optional btw. He didn’t have to do all that, but he did and now he’s dead. Don’t live your life in a way that the world is better following your death.’

Wolfe likened Kirk to a Nazi yet again in a separate story, adding: ‘We hate Nazis because they want us dead.’

Among the slew of posts cheering Kirk’s death, Wolfe reshared a message that read: ‘He wasn’t just a “conservative we disagreed with.” He was a fascist organizer who built his career spreading racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, Islamophobia, xenophobia, and anti-immigrant hate, actively harming marginalized communities every single day.

‘If you feel compelled to send his family condolences, fine, that’s your personal choice. But don’t turn around and scold others for refusing to shed tears over a man who dedicated his life to dehumanizing and endangering them. This doesn’t make you a “better person,” and if you’re a Christian, it doesn’t make you closer to going to heaven.’

As an alternate at the Tokyo games, Wolfe became the first openly transgender athlete to qualify for the Olympics for the United States.

Wolfe had already undergone a gender transition before competing in BMX as an amatuer in 2014.

However, Wolfe’s BMX freestyle career was effectively ended in 2023 when the Union Cycliste Internationale – cycling’s international governing body – implemented new regulations banning transgender athletes from participating in women’s competition.

The cyclist previously spoke in a March 2020 Facebook post of hopes to ‘burn the American flag’ at the Tokyo Olympics.

‘My goal is to win the Olympics so I can burn a US flag on the podium. This is what they focus on during a pandemic. Hurting trans children,’ Wolfe wrote at the time.

Wolfe’s public celebration of Kirk’s death this week disgusted many social media users, including tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who slammed the ‘sickening’ posts.

Kirk’s alleged assassin Tyler Robinson made chilling remarks about the conservative commentator during a family dinner in the lead-up to his murder, Daily Mail reported earlier on Friday.

Robinson, 22, brought up Kirk’s visit to Utah Valley University on September 10 and spoke of his dislike for the 31-year-old MAGA influencer, family members told investigators.

‘They talked about why they didn’t like him and the viewpoints that he had,’ Utah governor Spencer Cox revealed in a press conference this morning.

The family members also told police Robinson had described Kirk as ‘full of hate and spreading hate’.

Robinson’s comments raised a red flag among his family – so much so that they told police about the conversation following his arrest for Kirk’s murder.

It was Robinson’s father who ultimately turned his son into law enforcement.

Sources told the Daily Mail that Robinson confessed to his father, Matt Robinson, who owns and operates a construction company.

Matt had recognized his son in photos shared by the FBI and confronted him about the shooting.

When Robinson confessed, his dad urged him to turn himself in.

The 22-year-old reportedly told his dad that he would rather kill himself than turn himself in, but was persuaded to speak with a local youth minister, who also works with the US Marshals Service.

Cox said Friday that a family member of Robinson’s ‘reached out to a family friend, who contacted the Washington County Sheriff’s Office with information that Robinson had confessed to them or implied that he had committed the incident’.

He was taken into custody Thursday night.

Robinson’s family members told police the 22-year-old had become ‘more political in recent years’, Cox said.

They also confirmed Robinson had a grey Dodge Challenger – matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle.

Robinson’s roommate also directed officers to the suspect’s Discord platform.

The roommate said Robinson had messaged him asking to retrieve his rifle, wrapped in a towel in some bushes, Cox said.

Robinson now faces charges of aggravated murder, felony discharge of a firearm causing serious bodily injury, and obstruction of justice, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Cox said prosecutors will pursue the death penalty if he is convicted.

The motive for the assassination remains unclear.
