Lessons in Lifestyle

Target has issued a voluntary recall of two variations of its Up & Up brand baby wipes after potentially harmful bacteria was discovered during routine testing.

An announcement published Friday by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration revealed that multiple customers who bought the wipes had complained to Target and the product’s manufacturer, Sapro Temizlik Urunleri, about discoloration and symptoms including skin irritation, eye irritation and infections. Simultaneously, the FDA conducted product testing that “identified the presence of Burkholderia cepacia complex and Burkholderia gladioli,” two bacteria that could case life-threatening infections.

The FDA noted that healthy individuals would be at less of a risk of contracting an illness by coming in contact with the wipes, but for “immunocompromised individuals, newborns, infants and young children, the infection is more likely to spread into the bloodstream, potentially leading to life-threatening sepsis or pneumonia.”

Two different Up & Up products sold in Target stores nationwide and via the company’s website have been affected by the recall: the fragrance free and cucumber scented baby wipes.

Affected packages of the fragrance free wipes can be identified by the following codes:

Customers are urged to stop using the baby wipes immediately and return them to Target for a full refund.

Aside from the baby wipes, several other recent recalls have plagued shoppers. Pizza products sold at Walmart, Costco and more have been recalled due to potential contamination.

According to a notice last week from the FDA, certain batches of Champion Foods LLC’s Motor City Pizza Co. 5 Cheese Bread contained a dry milk powder that California Dairies, Inc. recalled in April due to potential salmonella contamination.

The cheese bread wasn’t the only product that contained the recently recalled dry milk powder. Last month, certain lots of Blackstone Parmesan Ranch seasoning, sold through the company’s website and Walmart stores nationwide, were recalled because they contained the dairy-based ingredient.
