An up-and-coming motorcyle racer – hailed as one of Spain’s ‘great promises’ in the sport – has died aged 17 after a horrific crash in his homeland.

Pau Alsina crashed at the MotorLand Aragon circuit near Alcaniz and was thrown from his motorbike, sustaining head injuries.

He was rushed to hospital in Zaragoza and underwent emergency surgery but died from his injuries on Monday, two days after his accident.

Alsina was competing in this year’s FIM JuniorGP World Championship and was placed 13th overall.

He began riding motorcycles aged three and from there grew his reputation to become one of Spain’s rising stars.

His family announced via his Instagram page that his wake will take place all Wednesday and until 11am on Thursday, with a mass at noon on that day.

A minute’s silence was also held on Tuesday in his home town of Sallent.

The teenager, from Sallent in Catalonia, raced for the Estrella Galicia 0,0 outfit.

The team said: ‘Pau’s commitment, energy, and always positive and warm attitude will remain with us forever. Rest in peace, Pau. We love you.’

Marc Marquez, one of the greatest motorcyclists ever and one of his heroes, said: ‘No words. How unfair life is. Rest in peace, Pau.’

Salvador Illa Roca, president of the government of Catalonia, said: ‘I mourn the death of the young rider Pau Alsina, one of the great promises of our motorcycling, in a tragic accident. My heartfelt condolences and warmth to his family, friends, and teammates.’

The Junior GP World Championsip, however, is still yet to comment.

Alsina’s crash is still being investigated to work out what exactly happened.

The youngster reportedly had a five-year plan to reach MotoGP, the highest class of motorcycle racing, which counts Valentino Rossi, Giacomo Agostini, and Marquez among its greatest names.

Alsina’s death comes just weeks after the passing of Borja Gomez, a 20-year-old former Moto2 rider who crashed in the European Stock Championship.
