The challenge is the national cyber emergency competition for UK university students.

David Marshall was one of the judges for the event. He judged one of the regional rounds in Manchester. Following this he judged the nationwide quarter-finals, semi-finals and final. These all took place at the iconic BT Tower in London, last week.

The event is designed to identify, test and nurture future cyber talent.

David Marshall, said

I was delighted to be involved in this year’s Cyber Leaders Challenge. We know that cyber security skills can be scarce, so it’s important that we help grow the talent of the future. This event did just that.

Over 2 days in London, 17 teams from universities all over the country were given a realistic scenario to manage. They were given a wealth of useful and not-so-useful information to sift through. They then produced and presented a briefing note on the situation and how they would manage it.

As judges, it was then our job to question them to test their thinking.

I was impressed with the skills and knowledge on show by these students. Many of them gave answers I’d expect from people who have been working in cyber security for a number of years. As a long time cyber security professional, this is very reassuring.

This was the first time that Sellafield Ltd has been involved in the event. David joined other experts from across the public and private sectors, including those from the National Cyber Security Centre.

Cyber security is a priority for all large organisations, and here at Sellafield Ltd, we’ve been working hard to strengthen our cyber security function. Taking part in the event was both a reflection of this, and our commitment to developing a pipeline of Information and Communications Technology (ICT) talent.

David added

Attending this event helped us understand the strength of cyber security talent at our universities. It also allowed us to work closely with other partners in the field as part of our improvement journey.

Opportunities

The cyber security team at Sellafield will be growing this year. With a mix of operational and information technology in use across the business, the challenge at Sellafield Ltd is like no other.
