A huge plot point in the forthcoming sequel to The Super Mario Bros Movie has seemingly been spoiled unintentionally in a cinema listing.

The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, due to be released in cinemas later this year, is a follow-up to the hugely popular 2023 video game adaptation.

It’s already known that many of the original voice cast are returning, including Chris Pratt, who plays Italian plumber Mario, Charlie Day, who plays his brother Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy, who plays Princess Peach, Keegan-Michael Key, who plays Toad, and Jack Black, who plays the villainous Bowser.

Added to the mix are Benny Safdie, who voices Bowser Jr, and Brie Larson, who voices Princess Rosalina. However, a since-deleted listing on the Everyman cinema chain website listed a plot description that mentions the inclusion of another of the franchise’s most popular characters: the rebarbative treasure hunter Wario.

Per IGN, the deleted plot description for the new film read: “After defeating Bowser and saving Brooklyn, Mario faces Wario and Bowser Jr.’s evil alliance. Now, alongside his friends and Yoshi, he must stop their plans for world domination.”

It is not confirmed whether or not the description is accurate, with Wario yet to feature in any of the film’s promotional materials.

Wario is one of the best known characters from the Mario video game series, and has been the focus of many spin-off games, including the WarioWare and Wario World series.

It is not known who would voice the character, with fans previously suggesting that Day’s It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia co-star Danny DeVito would be the ideal fit for the role.

Black, meanwhile, previously suggested that Wario could join the film adaptations, and proposed The Last of Us’s Pedro Pascal as a contender for the part.

“You know, what if there is a more powerful, more evil villain? Then I may need to be turned to help Mario and the rest to defend our universe against some other unseen force of evil,” he told GameSpot back in 2023. “Are you thinking what I’m thinking? Wario. Pedro Pascal is Wario.”

The Super Mario Bros Movie made nearly $1.4bn at the global box office, making it the second-highest-grossing film of 2023, and the 15th-highest-grossing film of all time.

The sequel will be released in cinemas on 1 April.
