Washington Commanders tight end Zach Ertz plans to return for his 14th season in the NFL – despite suffering an apparent career-ending injury last year.

The 35-year-old, who left the field in tears after tearing his ACL during a loss to the Minnesota Vikings in December, is expected to be cleared right around Week 1 of the 2026 season, according to NFL insider Tom Pelissero.

Ertz first joined the NFL in 2013 and has been with the Commanders since 2024. He moved to the nation’s capital after spells with the Lions, the Cardinals and the Eagles.

During his time in Philadelphia, he clinched his first and only championship ring after beating the New England Patriots at Super Bowl LII.

Many feared his career was over after the ACL tear in December, which saw him do a somersault after taking a big hit while jumping for a catch.

After landing heavily, Ertz immediately grabbed his right knee and, before long, cameras caught him sobbing as he was carted towards the locker room.

Backup quarterback Marcus Mariota could be seen consoling his teammate, who covered his face with a towel as emotion overwhelmed him. His right leg was in a brace and he was ruled out of the game, before the ACL tear was later confirmed.

More to follow.
