Lord Hill’s statue on top of The Column in Shrewsbury

Essential repairs are to be carried out to the statue of Lord Hill, which stands on top of The Column in Shrewsbury, with work set to begin next month (August 2025).

The statue has had a number of previous significant repairs in recent years and Shropshire Council is now seeking long-term support to replace it, which involves a number of complex considerations.

In the immediate future, the council has appointed local specialist heritage contractor Curry & Phillips to carry out significant remedial repair work to the statue.

Work is set to start in August and be completed in autumn 2025.

Information panels providing passers-by with details about Lord Hill and The Column will be placed on the fencing around The Column during the work. See example below.

The historic monument is maintained on a regular basis by the council, but unfortunately the statue is fragile, vulnerable to bad weather, and in need of further repairs to keep passers-by safe.

We appreciate the community’s support and understanding as we undertake these vital repairs to preserve the Lord Hill statue, and will ensure minimal disruption to the surrounding area.

Lord Hill’s Column was built between 1814 and 1816 and received its designation of Grade II* Listing in 1953. It is the tallest free standing Doric column in England and is a key focal point within Shropshire.
