‘Starmer’s shock NHS takeover’ and Putin’s ceasefire terms | UK News

The Daily Telegraph front page

Many of the papers report on Russia’s reservations over a peace deal in Ukraine. The Daily Telegraph leads on President Vladimir Putin’s response to the proposed 30-day ceasefire in the Ukraine war. It says Putin “knocked back” the idea from the Americans and quotes he has “serious questions” that he needs to discuss with President Trump.

Daily Express front page

The Daily Express also leads on Putin wanting peace “but only on my terms”, with the Russian leader saying “there are nuances” in response to a proposed temporary ceasefire.

The Times front page

Meanwhile, the Times reports on the thousands of workers set to lose their jobs as Sir Keir abolishes NHS England, with health leaders warning the upheaval could distract from goals like cutting wait times.

Financial Times front page

The Financial Times leads on Starmer pledging to take the health system “back into democratic control” with, it says, support from the Conservatives.

The Guardian front page

“Streeting scraps NHS England in ‘high-stakes’ push to improve care” reads the headline on the front of The Guardian. Health Secretary Wes Streeting is quoted as saying the move is the “final nail in the coffin of the disastrous 2012 reorganisation”.

Metro front page

The Metro calls Starmer’s NHS plan a “shock” as he targets “flabby, unfocused” quangos – short for Quasi-Autonomous Non-Governmental Organisations.

The i paper front page

The i focuses on what it calls the “NHS revolution”, it says the “takeover means buck stops” with Streeting, as the government says the move will free up “hundreds of millions of pounds” for frontline services.

The Daily Mail front page

The Daily Mail claims “patients to be put before NHS bureaucrats” in the planned shake-up to ditch the “world’s largest quango” as the government aims to slash red tape and improve care.

The Daily Mirror front page

The Mirror leads on the plea of teen Elianne Andam’s family to “put the knives down” after Hassan Sentamu, now 18, was jailed for life for her murder.

The Sun front page

The Sun leads on an interview with Prince William revealing why he fell in love with Aston Villa and explaining his match ritual with his children.

The Daily Star

The Daily Star splashes on a reported deficiency in robots, concluding “there’s hope for human civilisation after all”.
