More snow has been predicted to fall over London as the UK expects to see its coldest Winter night with temperatures set to plunge to -20C.
Liverpool and Aberdeen airports were forced to suspend flights on Tuesday morning as heavy rain, flooding and snow continue to disrupt travel and cause school closures.
Over the Pennines minimum temperatures were predicted to fall to as low as -20 C on Thursday night, the BBC reported.
It came as the Environment Agency issued a critical flood warning – indicating a “danger to life” as a mass evacuation was ordered for the River Soar at caravan parks near Barrow upon Soar in Leicestershire.
One man has died in the winter storm impacting much of the country, with North Yorkshire police saying a body pulled from floodwater near the River Aire has been formally identified. The man’s next of kin are still being informed.
Met Office yellow weather warnings for snow and ice for northern and western Scotland – including the northern and western isles – remain in place until 12pm on Wednesday.
At 11.10am on Tuesday, the Environment Agency has one danger-to-life flood warning, 144 flood warnings and 228 flood alerts, meaning flooding is possible, active across England.
Potential for more snow in the south on Wednesday
There is the potential for another frontal system to move in from the southwest on Wednesday, bringing further snow and ice. A Yellow Warning is currently in place to cover this.
Met Office Deputy Chief Meteorologist, Mike Silverstone, explained: “There is a chance of a further spell of rain, sleet and snow moving in from the southwest on Wednesday to affect some southern parts of the UK.”
“Whilst not all those in the warning area may be affected, it is possible that that 2-5 cm of snow may accumulate fairly widely. Whether this system will brush the south of the UK or miss us altogether still remains a little uncertain, but we’ll continue to assess this over the next day or two. Weather warnings may well be updated, so it’s important people stay up to date with the forecast.”
