Sir Alex Ferguson has reportedly been taken to hospital after feeling unwell at Old Trafford ahead of Manchester United’s Premier League match with Liverpool.

The 84-year-old, who led United to 38 trophies across nearly three decades at the club as manager, was taken into medical care ahead of kick off having been due to watch the game. Ferguson is a regular attendee of his former club’s home and away games.

The Daily Mail reports that Ferguson has been taken into hospital purely as a precautionary measure, with officials at Manchester United optimistic that he will soon be able to recuperate at home.

The Sun reports that he was first attended to by medics in the Stretford End tunnel before being taken to an ambulance and checked over inside the vehicle, where he was sat up and reported to be “okay”.

Manchester United declined to comment when approached by The Independent.

The Scot retired in 2013 after 27 years as manager. In May 2018, he underwent life-saving surgery after suffering a brain haemorrhage, with doctors giving him a 20 per cent chance of survival.

Speaking about the brain haemorrhage in his 2021 documentary Sir Alex Ferguson: Never Give In, he said: “There were five brain haemorrhages that day. Three died. Two survived. You know you are lucky.”

Ferguson’s paid ambassadorial role was ended in 2024 by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe, though he remains a regular attendee of games in the directors’ box at Old Trafford.
