Shropshire Council is celebrating a major milestone in its journey towards a greener, cleaner future, with 163 staff now trained in Carbon Literacy and 124 certified.

Milestone for carbon literacy training
This achievement marks significant progress towards the council’s ambitious goal of certifying 10% of its workforce and attaining Silver Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) status by 2027.
Monthly training sessions, delivered by dedicated in-house facilitators, have seen enthusiastic engagement across all directorates, with 175 pledges already made and a commitment to save 210 tonnes of CO₂.
The council’s efforts are part of a global movement, as Carbon Literacy continues to influence organisations and communities worldwide.
The council’s sights are set even higher, with Gold CLO status requiring half the workforce to be certified by 2033.
Plans are underway to expand cohort sizes and explore in-person options to accelerate progress. The Carbon Literacy Progress Report highlights the value of in-house training, which has significantly reduced costs, and the vital role of facilitators who volunteer their time to support colleagues.
Looking ahead, the council aims to make Carbon Literacy training a core part of staff induction and professional development, targeting key service areas and encouraging a culture of continuous learning and collaboration.
Cllr David Vasmer, portfolio holder for highways and environment, said:
Beyond the organisational benefits, the report underscores the wider impact of climate action in Shropshire. By investing in energy efficiency and low-carbon initiatives, the council and county stand to save millions on energy and adaptation costs, create thousands of green jobs, and boost the local economy.
With strong leadership, evidence-based decision-making, and a shared commitment to net zero, Shropshire is demonstrating how local action can deliver real value for people, the environment, and the economy.
Carbon Literacy Training is scheduled to relaunch in 2026,and all being well new dates will be advertised towards the end of this year.
