A first look at Shrek 5 has revealed the grumpy ogre, his family and Donkey landing in jail, with Donkey also transformed into a sheep.

Universal Pictures released a trailer on Tuesday, offering fans a glimpse into the eagerly-awaited fifth instalment of the animated franchise.

Mike Myers voices the titular character, married to Princess Fiona (Cameron Diaz), with Eddie Murphy as his best friend, Donkey. The new adventure sees the beloved characters facing unexpected challenges, including their incarceration.

Additionally, Hollywood actress Zendaya was previously announced to voice Shrek and Fiona’s daughter, Felicia. Marcello Hernandez, known from Happy Gilmore 2, and Superman actor Skyler Gisondo will voice her brothers, Fergus and Farkle.

The trailer opens with a fairytale book depicting Shrek and Donkey headed to a magical kingdom, while a narrator says: “Once upon a time, a hideous ogre and a delusional donkey embarked on a journey to the magical city of Further, Further Away.”

The story is interrupted by Donkey, who is heard saying “oh my god, it’s happening, it’s happening” as it is revealed he is among ogres Fiona, Shrek, Fergus and Farkle in their swamp home.

The eccentric donkey then talks about needing a makeover, and as he strikes several poses he says he needs to “get my arms yoked and my back jacked, my abs ab-ded – maybe even tighten up my badonkadonk”.

Shrek replies: “No, definitely not.”

The ogre then tells Donkey not to say that they are off on their next adventure, before revealing a glimpse of a magical kingdom and showing a clip of Donkey trying to make his way onto a wooden train.

Gingerbread man Gingey is then seen shaking his bottom – which has been enhanced by two gumdrops – while joined by two gingerbread women, and he exclaims: “I’m caked up like a friggin’ bakery.”

Donkey does a drumroll and finally says that he and Shrek are headed on an adventure, then clips show the group travelling in their onion-shaped carriage down a dark, stormy road featuring a threatening snowman.

The trailer also shows glimpses of a magical, personified clock, mermaids swimming in a body of water, and a police chase featuring horse-drawn carriages.

Over the clips, Donkey says: “Shrek and Donkey, two stalwart friends off on another whirlwind big city adventure.”

Donkey is then turned into a sheep and says that “this is baa-d”, before he is thrown into a jail cell alongside Shrek, Fiona, Fergus and Farkle.

While behind bars, he is singing sadly while Shrek and his family appear frustrated – before Shrek exclaims “Donkey”.

The trailer ends with All Star by Smash Mouth – a song strongly associated with the franchise since appearing in its first film, which was released in 2001 and won an Oscar for best animated feature film.

It has also been revealed that Shrek 5 will be released next year, which comes almost 17 years after the release of its predecessor Shrek: Forever After.

Shrek is based on the 1990 book from writer William Steig.

The franchise has also seen multiple spin-off films and specials, including 2011 film Puss In Boots and its 2022 sequel titled Puss In Boots: The Last Wish – both of which were Oscar-nominated.
