Jockey Charlie Marshall has been handed a 12-day suspension after forcing his tired horse Go On Chez to clamber over the final hurdle in a chaotic finish at Fakenham Racecourse.

Go On Chez was the only runner left standing by the time the field reached the final fence in the four-runner Hunter Chase. The other contenders – Coolagh Park, Bowtogreatness and Janika – had all fallen earlier in the race.

Go On Chez was clearly tired approaching the final fence, slowing noticeably as it neared the obstacle, but 5lb claimer Marshall insisted on asking the horse to jump.

The 10-year-old just about managed to get over the hurdle but came down in the middle of the fence, only just finding enough effort to drag its hind legs clear and land on the other side.

It then managed to pick up into a trot before heading over the finish line to win the race.

The British Horseracing Authority stewards’ report read: ‘An enquiry was held to consider whether Mr Charlie Marshall, the rider of the winner GO ON CHEZ, had continued in the race when the horse appeared to have no more to give after barely being able to negotiate the final fence.

‘The rider and the Veterinary Officer were interviewed, and recordings of the incident were viewed.

‘Mr Charlie Marshall was suspended for 12 days on dates to be notified to him by the Head Office of the British Horseracing Authority.’

Racing TV presenter Nick Lightfoot said after the race: ‘It was an extremely unpleasant look. With a strong crowd, including those watching from afar, it is the kind of sight you do not want to see in racing.’

‘I’m glad that the BHA are taking as strong a stance within the parameters of the law on it.’
