Sebastian Stan has confirmed that he will portray the villain Two-Face in Matt Reeves’ upcoming sequel The Batman: Part II, with filming set to start in the coming weeks.

Stan was speaking to Deadline at the Cannes film festival while promoting Fjord, the Palme d’Or-winning drama directed by Cristian Mungiu. when he responded to online speculation about his role as Harvey Dent and his transformation into Two-Face, one of Batman’s best-known antagonists.

The Apprentice star said he would be travelling soon to London “over summer” to begin work on Reeves’ sequel, telling the outlet that he would play “many roles in this one”. In DC Comics, Dent is introduced as Gotham City’s district attorney and an ally of Batman before an attack leaves half his face disfigured, leading to the emergence of the criminal alter ego Two-Face.

Talking about working with the film’s hair and makeup team who “devised how his disfigurement will look,” Stan said: “I’m excited, I’m nervous and trying to keep surprising myself.”

The character has previously been portrayed on screen by Tommy Lee Jones in Joel Schumacher’s Batman Forever (1995) and Aaron Eckhart in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight (2008).

The Batman was released in March 2022 and starred Robert Pattinson as a younger Bruce Wayne and Jeffrey Wright as Gotham City police lieutenant Jim Gordon who investigated a series of murders carried out by the Riddler, portrayed by Paul Dano.

The film went on to receive largely positive reviews from critics and made $772m worldwide.

The sequel will see Pattinson and Wright reprise their roles, alongside Andy Serkis as Alfred Pennyworth, Colin Farrell as Oz Cobb, also known as the Penguin, Jayme Lawson as Mayor Bella Reál and Gil Perez-Abraham as Officer Martinez.

Reeves confirmed earlier this month that Stan, along with his Marvel costar Scarlett Johansson, had joined the cast of the film. While he did not reveal the role the actors had been cast in, reports from December said Stan was reportedly in talks to play Harvey Dent.

Talking about working with the film’s hair and makeup team who “devised how his disfigurement will look,” Stan told Deadline: “I’m excited, I’m nervous and trying to keep surprising myself.”

The sequel is expected to begin full production this week, according to trade publication World of Reel, although second-unit work and technical preparation are already reportedly under way in Liverpool. According to the BBC, vehicles had been spotted near St George’s Hall and the Queensway Tunnel, but the activity is likely more of a “technical recce”.

Earlier this month, Reeves posted images teasing snow-covered set pieces and the Batmobile driving through winter conditions, captioning one image “#SnowTires”.

In addition to Stan and Johansson, Reeves also announced that Charles Dance, Brian Tyree Henry, and Sebastian Koch had joined the film’s cast. Little is known about the sequel other than that it is now scheduled for release on 1 October 2027, having originally been earmarked for 2026.
