  • Dyche was sacked by Everton back in January after a string of poor results
  • The 53-year-old has been criticised for his approach during much of his career

Sean Dyche has opened up on the infamous ‘Utter Woke Nonsense’ meme which has gone viral in recent years.

The former Everton and Burnley manager has long been criticised for his style of play, which has often been described as ‘old-fashioned’.

His approach to the game brought about a meme that includes a picture of a stone-faced Dyche, alongside the words ‘Utter Woke Nonsense’.

It is usually shared by social media users when they disapprove of something in the modern game and is used with a degree of irony.

Years after the creation of the meme, the 53-year-old has told Gary Lineker on The Rest Is Football podcast that his views are not far wrong from the meaning behind the online joke.

‘The thing is, once you are in that box, what is the point of fighting it? There is no point in fighting it, it’s just life,’ said Dyche.

‘Look at me, I fit in that box. The utter woke nonsense thing that blew up, everyone just put two and two together.

‘Of course, I have got some views of modern society, like anybody else has views. It all just adds to the bundle.’

Dyche, who is currently without a job, is known for his direct a ppraoch when it comes to management.

During his decade at Burnley, the Englishman guided the club to two promotions to the Premier League through his unique style.

Despite much condemnation of his tactics while in Lancashire, he managed to keep the club in the top flight for six seasons before being sacked in 2022, even securing Europa League football for the Clarets in 2018.

And while his time at Everton – where he was sacked in January – was less successful, Dyche believes that his results while at Burnley are enough to show why his tactics are not to be sniffed at.

‘All I try and do is develop players and develop teams that can win. Slightly different at Everton because we had to win enough.

‘At Burney it was different as well, building a club off the pitch as well as on the pitch.

‘There is a judgment from the outside world, which is the media and the fans, but what about the judgment – which people forget – from inside of your job?

‘I’ll give you an example, the first year I went to Burnley we had a £13million wage bill, which we reduced the first summer down to £9m.

‘Then we got promoted the next year, and by the end of my time at Burnley, if you imagine, we will call it ten years, the projection of that ten years in the Championship would have been about 150-180, maybe £200m.

‘£1billion we brought into Burnley. A billion, over ten years. People say “you don’t play the right way” and I’m like “really?”, I brought in £1b.’
