Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra has a lot of new and upgraded features which make it sound like a mobile gamer’s dream.

The Galaxy S26 Ultra uses a customised mobile processor, the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Mobile Platform for Galaxy, designed to give much better performance with key gains across CPU (Computer Processing Unit), GPU (Graphics Processing Unit) and NPU (Neural Processing Unit) for much faster and smoother experiences.

Basically, if these components are higher in quality, that means games should run much better too.

That all sounds rather promising on paper – but what’s it really like in practice?

Having been hands-on with the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra with a specific focus on gaming, here’s everything you need to know…

We’ve tested out a number of intensive games on the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra (Jake Brigstock/The Independent)

What gaming features does the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra offer?

Focusing on key gaming specs, Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra has a CPU performance increase of 19 per cent, which acts as the ‘brain’ of the device and is crucial for running games the way developers want them to, and a 24 per cent boost in GPU, the component that provides smooth, high-quality visuals, when compared to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra.

There’s also 16GB of RAM (Random Access Memory) in the 1TB model (with 12GB of RAM in the 256GB and 512GB models), which is relied on by the CPU to process high-speed data during gameplay. To note, the unit I tried was the 256GB model.

The screen is 120hZ, which means supported games can run up to 120fps (frames per second), making them look incredibly smooth.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra also has an improved ProScaler algorithm compared to the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra that improves image scaling so photos and videos appear much more clearly and the mobile Digital Natural Image engine (mDNIe) which gives more subtle and lifelike colours with four times the precision compared to the previous generation.

Can the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra handle high-end Android games?

Yes, because of these improved specs, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra can run high-end Android games really well.

I played a number of games that push performance limits on mobile with a mix of touch controls and a mobile controller. To note, I had no issues with compatibility of my trusty controller at all.

And the image quality, performance and sound across all of these games was nothing short of spectacular.

The 6.9 inch display packs a punch, whatever game you play. Action, first-person shooters, MMORPGs (massively multiplayer online role-playing games), racing, sports games and more all run really smooth across the board. I stress tested a number of titles and all performed beyond expectations.

In one open-world action game, I ran the highest settings possible and it said the device was overclocked, meaning I ran the components at a higher rate than Samsung intends.

While I would not recommend doing this day-to-day, this revealed really strong performance. Visuals still looked great and there was the infrequent stutter but nothing too major. On the recommended default settings, I didn’t notice a single hitch.

In one particular MMORPG (massively multiplayer online role-playing games) I tested, there’s the option to tweak settings to run as extreme as the highest graphics possible with 60fps or dialling the visuals down a bit to run at 120fps.

And in both modes, I couldn’t get over just how well it looked and ran. Yes, having a strong internet connection is necessary for the title I tested as it requires a strong, active connection to play, but the way the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra does everything that’s asked of it without missing a beat here is mightily impressive.

In the most graphically ambitious games, the titles that make you think ‘wow, how is that running on mobile’, there is the very infrequent stutter here or there but that’s understandable given the scope of these games. In these titles, depth of colour really shines through too.

I focused on trying out demanding games while checking out the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra because if they can run these kinds of titles without any issues, then games which are much less intensive on the system will run without any problems too.

Battery life when gaming with the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is impressive, with no impact on gameplay even as it depletes

How does the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra perform during long gaming sessions?

During longer play sessions and as the battery depleted, I did not notice this affect my gameplay experience whatsoever.

The Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra really holds its own even when the charge runs down. It does not get too warm and performance remains stable throughout longer sessions.

How long does the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra battery last while gaming?

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra’s battery lasts a lot longer than its predecessor, the Galaxy S25 Ultra. I found that with games that are fairly intensive on the battery, its life lasted around the eight-to-10 hour mark, which is really impressive.

With the most intensive games, this average came down to around five hours.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra has the 5,000mAh* like the Galaxy S25 but this time, there’s a completely redesigned vapour chamber which is bigger and 21 per cent more efficient in heat dissipation (the name of the process that stops overheating).

I did not notice overheating at any point when playing games. When downloading huge updates, the device did get a bit warm, but as soon as this was complete and the gameplay started it cooled quickly.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is as future-proof for gaming as you can get

Is the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra future-proof for mobile gaming?

While I can’t give a definitive answer on this, as you can never be certain about what will happen over the next few years, my best prediction is that yes, it will be future-proof in terms of gaming for the next few years.

That’s because from my experience with it, it handles some of the most demanding Android games with relative ease and with decent battery life too.

That means if even more demanding games release, which they undoubtedly will, then I’d fully expect the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra to be able to run them no problem.

Is the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra good for gaming?

Overall, the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is brilliant for gaming and is probably the best Android device you can get for it right now.

High-end games run pretty much flawlessly, the games themselves look great on the device, it lasts impressively well on a single charge and it never feels hot to hold, despite the intensive nature of them.

If you’re looking for the best Android device that can run high-end games pretty much without any issues at all, then I’d highly recommend the Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra.
