Controversial former Footy Show host Sam Newman has dropped a new nickname for Prime Minister Anthony Albanese that was so shocking even Wayne Carey was taken off guard.

The former footy stars were speaking on the You Cannot Be Serious podcast when Newman casually dropped the bomb.

It came as Carey expressed fears that footy fans were not travelling to Gather Round in Adelaide because of rising fuel expenses.

Petrol and diesel prices have soared in recent weeks because of the United State’s conflict against Iran, forcing the closure of global trade passage the Strait of Hormuz.

Carey was talking about tickets becoming available to matches outside of the marquee fixtures amid fears fans were unable to attend because of recent global events.

‘Maybe people are not travelling to Adelaide because of your mate’s fuel debacle,’ Carey said, in reference to POTUS Trump.

‘Because he wants to take over the world oil supply,’ Newman replied.

‘You’ve said all the rhubarb,  you’ve said all the crap,’ Carey fired back.

‘So he’s going to stuff Gather Round. The only good thing to come of it, is that the roads aren’t as busy.’

It was at this point that Newman wanted to dole out some of the blame on Australian PM Anthony Albanese, and he did so with a very vulgar new nickname.

‘Anal, he won’t …’ Newman began.

Carey quickly interrupted, asking ‘who?’.

‘Anthony, Albanese, you know, Sco, Mo [former PM Scott Morrison’s nickname], An, Al,’ Newman replied.

‘Why doesn’t he jump on and support Trump? They’re our allies.

Concerns grew that Gather Round attendance would suffer due to expensive travel, accommodation costs and broader economic strain

‘Because they’re just s*** scared, they’re just peasants.’

Newman has been a vocal critic of the Albanese government since the last Federal election, using his platforms to challenge the Labor leadership and social policies.

In 2023, Newman faced intense backlash for encouraging people to boo during Welcome to Country ceremonies, a policy supported by the Albanese government.

In January, Newman was among a group of sports figures signing a petition calling on the Albanese government to initiate a Federal royal commission into rising antisemitism.

That followed the Bondi Beach shooting tragedy on December 14, 2025, where Jewish families were targeted by two men brandishing firearms.

Fears of low attendance at Gather Round were driven by a ‘perfect storm’ of rising fuel prices, cost-of-living pressures and interest rate hikes hitting fans.

Many supporters, particularly those travelling from Victoria, reconsidered or cancelled trips due to the high cost of driving and accommodation.

Hotels had more availability than expected and some prices dropped, signalling softer demand compared to previous years.

Weather disruptions and travel uncertainty also added to concerns, raising doubts about crowd numbers across the Adelaide fixtures.

Despite early concerns, the 2026 opening match between the Adelaide Crows and Carlton was a sell-out.
