Russell Wilson could be preparing to hang up his cleats as it emerges that the quarterback is in negotiations for a new role away from the football field.

The veteran, 37, is currently a free agent with his NFL future having been cast in uncertainty after he left the New York Giants following just one ill-fated year.

Despite suggestions that Wilson could remain in New York as a backup to Jets quarterback Geno Smith, it has now been revealed that he could take his career in a new direction.

The signal caller is said to be in ‘deep discussions’ over a move to television, according to a report from The Athletic.

CBS’s pregame Sunday show, ‘The NFL Today,’ is said to be the frontrunner for Wilson’s talents.

The former Super Bowl winner and the network have reportedly held lengthy talks over the possibility of Wilson replacing Matt Ryan, who left the show to become president of football for the Atlanta Falcons.

Wilson would be joining a panel comprised of host James Brown and analysts Nate Burleson and Bill Cowher.

The future Hall of Famer has close links to CBS, having worked with the network in the past, including a surprise appearance during the Giants’ bye-week last season.

However, he may not be the only one in the running. CBS is also said to be interested in Hall of Fame linebacker Luke Kuechly.

CBS has made a number of high-profile moves this offseason, including the blockbuster addition of former Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin.

Meanwhile, Wilson has not given up on a potential return to the gridiron as he reportedly visited with the New York Jets on Monday.

The Jets currently have Geno Smith as their starting quarterback but are believed to be in the market for a veteran backup.

New York’s quarterback room also comprises of Bailey Zappe, Brady Cook and Cade Klubnik, whom the team drafted in the fourth round on Saturday.

Wilson and Smith have history together, having played together with the Seattle Seahawks in 2020 and 2021.

General manager Darren Mougey and head coach Aaron Glenn reportedly discussed potential backup options with Smith, who is said to have spoken fondly of his time with Wilson in Seattle.

The Jets front office reportedly opened dialogue with Wilson but both parties decided to wait until the NFL Draft last week before arranging a visit.

Wilson also previously crossed paths with Mougey while they were both with the Denver Broncos in 2022 to 2023. Mougey was the Broncos’ assistant general manager, while Wilson was the starting quarterback.

Despite reported interest from both parties, no signing is believed to be imminent.

Wilson began last season as the starter but the team drafted Jaxson Dart in the first round and fans were pretty quickly demanding the rookie became their starter after a rocky start.

They got their wish in Week 4 after a 0-3 start and, later in the campaign, Wilson was overlooked for Jameis Winston when Dart entered concussion protocol.

He appeared briefly in three more games, completing a total of 69 of 119 passes for 831 yards with three touchdowns and three interceptions during his year with the Giants.

Wilson’s time with the Giants came to an end when his one-year deal expired earlier this year.
