Ruben Amorim is set for talks with Manchester United’s hierarchy in the international break after casting fresh doubt over his future at Old Trafford.

United’s embarrassing Carabao Cup capitulation to Grimsby Town on Wednesday night has increased the early-season pressure on Amorim after spending more than £200million on new signings this summer.

Amorim, who considered his position in January and then said in May that he would do away without compensation if he isn’t the right man for the job, raised more concerns over his future in the wake of United’s defeat to the League Two club on penalties.

The frustrated 40-year-old described it as ‘the limit’ and indicated that he will speak to his employers during the two-week international break that follows United’s clash with Burnley at Old Trafford on Saturday.

‘I think the players spoke really loudly about what they want today,’ he said, hinting that they are not on board with his system.

‘Something has to change, and you’re not going to change 22 players again.

‘It’s hard to face everything. We move to the next game, then we have time to decide things.’

Daily Mail Sport understands that some of the players who have gone out on loan or face an uncertain future at United ahead of Monday’s transfer deadline are wondering if they can outlast Amorim at Old Trafford.

However, United sources insist there are no plans to make a change so early in the season, and believe that emotion got the better of their head coach at Blundell Park.

It would not be the first time and they expect him to offer more clarity when he holds his pre-match press conference at Carrington this lunchtime (fri).

Amorim was at the training ground at 7am yesterday morning (thurs) to prepare for Burnley just six hours after United’s team bus arrived back from Cleethorpes.

He is under pressure to deliver a first Premier League victory of the season at the third attempt after winning only seven of his 29 league games in charge.
