Ruben Amorim is prepared to leave Manchester United today without a penny in compensation if owners and fans no longer believe he can turn the club around.
Amorim was left in disbelief at how Manchester United, in his eyes the ‘better team’ in a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur to lose the Europa League final, fluffed the one chance to save their embarrassing and abject season.
Asked what he can say to supporters to give them hope that his methods – which he is refusing to compromise on in any way – can work in the long term, he made a stunning admission on his future.
‘I have nothing to show to the fans, so in this moment it is a little bit of faith (that is required),’ he said.
‘Let’s see (on the future). Like I said before, I am always open.
‘If the board and fans feel that I am not the right guy, I will go in the next day without any conversation about compensation, but I will not quit.

The club saw their faint hopes of redemption this season snuffed out by Tottenham in Bilbao

Sir Jim Ratcliffe and the Man United board will have a difficult summer reflecting on this season
‘I am really confident on my job and as you see I will not change nothing in the way I do things.’
Amorim was unimpressed at the suggestion that he got his selection wrong by selecting Mason Mount ahead of Alejandro Garnacho in the left No 10 role.
Garnacho put up a subtle Instagram story prior to the final which seemed to speak to his disappointment, and after the match his brother Roberto put up an angry story of his own.
‘Working as no one else, helping every round, coming from 2 goals last 2 finals, just to be on the pitch 19 mins nd (sic) get thrown under the bus. Wowe [sic] hajjahhahahaha.’
But Amorim disagreed that his team selection was wrong and pointed to missed chances made by Garnacho in the previous round.
‘It’s easy to say that now,’ he said on the suggestion Garnacho should have started.
‘Who missed the big opportunity in the first half in the semi-final? Garnacho. Football is like that.’
