Ruben Amorim was effusive in his praise of new signing Matheus Cunha after the Brazilian’s strong performance in Manchester United’s pre-season friendly win over West Ham.

Cunha, 26, was a lively presence as the Red Devils secured a 2-1 win at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.

While he did not get on the scoresheet – with captain Bruno Fernandes scoring both United goals – Cunha did impress Amorim with his overall contribution.

Jarrod Bowen pulled one back for the Hammers but United were able to hold on for victory in sweltering conditions.

Amorim also praised Rasmus Hojlund, along with midfielders Fernandes, Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte after an energetic display from his side.

Speaking in his post-match press conference, when asked who shone out in particular, he said: ‘All the guys. I don’t want to talk specifically.

‘Rasmus [Hojlund] did well. I really liked Rasmus’s game, the runs and the way he fought during the game, one against one, when we kicked the ball. He connected with the team-mates so he did a great job.

‘Matheus Cunha is that kind of player that can help us, he can help us a lot because he can run with the ball and that is something that can change the game. We missed that last year.

‘In the first half, Kobbie [Mainoo] and Manu [Ugarte] were really good. I’m not going to talk about the second team because it’s really hard for 11 [10] players to go to the pitch, you know, a lot of young kids.

‘But I really like the team. Of course, you have to look at the game and you have to improve things.’

Amorim also admitted that fellow new signing Mbeumo will not feature in the second game of United’s US tour when they take on Bournemouth at Soldier Field in the early hours of Thursday morning.

However, the United boss is hopeful that the Cameroon international could play a part in the last game against Everton at the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta next Sunday.

‘He is not going to play the next one,’ said Amorim, who put his players through a training session after game in New Jersey before they got straight on a flight back to Chicago from Westchester.

‘We hope to have Bryan in the last game. He is training now, so we will see.’

United would then still have one more friendly – against Fiorentina at Old Trafford on August 9 – before they kick off the season at home to Arsenal eight days later.
