Ruben Amorim admits he doesn’t ‘know how to explain’ why Man United fans continue to back him ahead of Europa League final following dismal domestic campaign

Ruben Amorim is at a loss to explain why Manchester United fans are still backing him and he isn’t under the same pressure as Ange Postecoglou before the Europa League final against Tottenham.

While Postecoglou faces an uncertain future whatever the outcome in Bilbao on Wednesday night, Amorim is planning ahead to fix United’s problems next season.

The 40-year-old believes one factor in his favour is that he warned the United board a storm was coming when he began the job in November and his prediction has come true.

‘I don’t know how to explain how the fans like me in this moment,’ said Amorim. ‘It’s hard to explain but I will try to prove myself to the fans and to the board, but I don’t have an explanation for you.

‘The good thing is I never worry about that. That is a part of being a coach and the most important thing is I know what I am doing and I explained everything when we started.

‘I explained about the storm [coming], I explained all the problems we have to the board, so I was so clear and I explained that I will not change my idea.

The Red Devils boss has insisted that the time will come when he is under pressure for success

‘So they cannot say one thing about what I said to get job and then I change my mind. It’s the opposite. I think the board can understand that and I think the fans can understand that.’

However, Amorim admitted that the time will come when he is under more pressure to deliver success.

‘We will reach a moment where have to win, no matter what,’ he added. ‘I know that in this kind of club – also Tottenham but especially Manchester United – it’s strange because you have some coaches here that lose some games and are sacked. It’s hard to explain.

‘I think people see what we are trying to do and see I’m about thinking more about the club than myself. People, especially the board, understand that we have a lot of issues that are really hard.

‘We already know the problems. There are a lot of things we need to change in our club: the way we do everything during the week in Carrington, the recruitment, the academy I think we need to improve. It’s hard to point at one thing.

‘That will not be solved by winning a cup. For me, we have bigger things to deal with to put this club back to the top. But tomorrow will be important for us and for our fans because winning can help us to have that strength to do every job we have to do.

‘We have a lot to do in our club, not just winning, but tomorrow will be massive for us and our fans.

‘It is going to help us to finish the season. People will look at our team in a different way because winning a European title is really important.

‘But again nothing is going to change our season. Players know, everybody knows the stuff, the fans know. But winning a European title can help us to have that feeling that can help us to build a future.’
