Ash Barty has given her fans an unvarnished look into her family life as she chatted to Roger Federer about the challenges of raising two small children in heartwarming scenes at the Australian Open.
The three-time Grand Slam champion teamed up with the Swiss tennis icon in a legends match at Melbourne Park on Saturday night after making a surprise entrance at centre court.
During a break in play, Barty answered Federer’s questions about her son Hayden and baby daughter Jordan.
‘Yeah, two and a half and seven months, so still young,’ Barty began after ‘Fed’ asked her how old her kids are.
‘So you are busy?’ he replied.
‘Yes, in the trenches, I love it. I absolutely love it, though,’ Barty said.

When Federer asked if ‘nights are OK’, the Aussie replied, ‘Yeah, getting better.
‘[It’s] the little one at night.’
After saying that stage of parenthood is ‘so cute’, Federer was momentarily confused when Barty told him her children’s names, as the former women’s world No.1 had to explain to him that Jordan is a girl.
The former Wimbledon, French and Australian Open champion made her surprise entrance while Federer and his fellow greats of the game Andre Agassi, Lleyton Hewitt and Pat Rafter were playing doubles.
There was a dramatic pause as Agassi told the crowd, ‘There’s only one chance we can win out here today – if we can find another Aussie in this joint to come out here.
‘Is there by chance another Aussie Open winner here, like an Ash Barty?’
The 29-year-old Queenslander then emerged to a huge round of applause and teamed up with Federer against her countrymen.
Barty and Federer took the third and deciding set of the match, with the Swiss hitting the winning stroke.

Shortly before Jordan was born, Barty said she was readying herself to deal with ‘chaos’ with her second child.
‘As an athlete I used to be the most meticulous, organised person and now it’s absolute carnage,’ Barty said.
She announced she was expecting Jordan in a post on Christmas Day, showing her followers a picture of Hayden standing in front of their tree wearing a T-shirt bearing the words ‘I’m going to be a… big brother’.
Barty captioned the photo, ‘Merry Christmas from our growing family to yours!’
After winning the 2019 French Open, taking the Wimbledon crown in 2021 and making a dream come true with her 2022 Australian Open title, Barty stunned the sporting world by retiring at the peak of her powers on March 23 that year.
She and her husband Garry Kissick met in 2017, married in July 2022 and revealed Hayden’s birth by posting a sweet photo of him for her fans along with the words, ‘Our beautiful boy. Welcome to the world, Hayden!’
