Manchester City are facing a fight to hold onto star man Rodri, according to a report.

The midfielder has been one of Pep Guardiola’s most important players over the last few years, anchoring their Treble win in 2023 and their run of four Premier League title wins in a row between 2021 and 2024.

They missed him for the majority of last season after he tore his ACL, but he returned to action towards the end of the campaign and featured in the Club World Cup – despite picking up an injury in City’s final match in the competition.

Still, his current issue isn’t one that will keep him out for a long time, and City are expected to be better for his return in the upcoming campaign.

But how long they will be able to call on the Spaniard remains to be seen. His current contract runs until 2027, and there is yet to be any agreement on a new deal.

That, according to Spanish publication AS, is because the player himself is yet to decide on his future, with giants from his homeland circling.

The report suggests that there is a contract offer on the table for Rodri to extend his stay at City until 2029, with it suggested to be a lucrative offer.

it s also suggested that the salary would take him closer to Erling Haaland as the highest paid player in the squad, and would make him the highest paid midfielder in Europe.

There are, though, club ambitions that could come into play. It is reported that Real Madrid have made the 29-year-old their primary midfield target – and the player is not in a rush to decide on his future.

Rodri is one of the leaders in Spain’s national team and is a native of Madrid, previously playing for Atletico – Real’s rivals.

City are keen to avoid a situation that could see Rodri leave for free, but, if an agreement is not reached by next summer, a decision will have to be made.

It is reported that the threat of City losing Rodri is more prominent than ever, with the pull of Real Madrid evident in recent seasons.

City will kick off their Premier League season away to Wolves next weekend as they look to try and regain the title.
