Explore global opportunities in robotics and automation in manufacturing
Innovate UK is inviting businesses working in robotics and automation to apply for the Global Business Innovation Programme (GBIP) focusing on Japan.
Selected businesses will take part in a structured programme designed to accelerate international growth and collaboration. The programme includes
- a preparation workshop
- a tailored five-day innovation visit to Japan
- follow-up support to help businesses exploit opportunities and build networks
Focus areas
This GBIP targets innovative UK businesses with technologies in
- robotics and automation in manufacturing, including mobile robots and collaborative robots (cobots)
- artificial intelligence integration in robotics, such as adaptive control and vision systems
- related technologies like robotic control systems, end-of-arm tooling, system integration, modular robotics, and digital engineering (including digital twins and predictive maintenance)
Why Japan
Japan is a global pioneer in robotics, with very high robot density in manufacturing and a strong focus on productivity, sustainability, and innovation in smart factories. The Japanese government supports next-generation robotics and AI-enhanced systems in sectors like automotive, electronics, precision machinery, and logistics, making it a prime market for UK businesses seeking collaborative R&D and technology exchange.

This GBIP is being delivered by Innovate UK and funded by Made Smarter Innovation (MSI). It is one of five GBIPs running between now and March 2026 as part of the MSI Challenge. The four other GBIPs are focused on
- additive manufacturing in Germany (apply by 10 September)
- manufacturing digital supply chain ecosystem in Singapore
- robotics and automation in manufacturing in South Korea
- AI enhanced manufacturing in the USA
A business can apply to the five MSI GBIPs but can only, if selected, participate in a maximum of two of the five.
