The working days were chosen to avoid big events in Manchester

Resurfacing work is set to take place to level out an uneven stretch of the M62.

National Highways said repairs would be carried out along the motorway heading westbound between Junction 12 (Eccles interchange) and Junction 11 (Birchwood) across Friday 21 and Saturday 22 February.

A spokesman said: “We’ve carefully chosen that weekend as it’s pretty quiet in Manchester. People don’t seem to appreciate that we frequently have a moratorium on works when there are big events.”

Various lane closures will be in place across the two days, including a full overnight closure of the westbound carriageway from 21:00 on Friday until 06:00 GMT.

Two lanes of four will then be closed throughout the daytime of Saturday, from 06:00 to 22:30.

There will also be a full overnight closure of the westbound carriageway from 22.30 that day until 06:00.

‘Bumpy surface’

The later start is in order to accommodate traffic for an event at the AO Arena in Manchester.

National Highways said Manchester United fans heading to Everton for Saturday’s 12:30 kick-off can still use the M62 or the M60/M56/M6 to M62 at Croft Interchange if they want to avoid any congestion past the two lane closures.

Manchester City host Liverpool on the Sunday but the agency clarified the work will have been finished by then.

It said the motorway’s current bumpy surface is due to the topography of the land between Manchester and Liverpool.
