Revealed: New York Jets could snub Ty Simpson and take surprise quarterback in NFL Draft

The New York Jets are reportedly considering snubbing Ty Simpson and opting to go with another quarterback in the upcoming NFL Draft.

The Jets held a private workout with Alabama quarterback Simpson last month to determine if he could become the new face of the franchise.

However, another name has now entered the mix with the Jets said to be considering Penn State’s Drew Allar instead.

Allar also recently had a private workout at the Jets facility and ESPN reported on Thursday they may be open to trying to draft him in the fourth round.

Simpson is expected to be taken way before the fourth round, meaning the Jets would need to use either their pick at No. 16 or No. 33 in order to get him.

Simpson is widely regarded as the second-best quarterback in this year’s class after Indiana’s Fernando Mendoza, who is surely going to be chosen No. 1 by Tom Brady and the Las Vegas Raiders.

The 6-foot-5, 228lbs Allar returned to Penn State last year rather than turning pro to pursue a national championship. But nothing went right.

The top-ranked team in preseason polls faltered early and the season unraveled quickly, leading to the midseason firing of coach James Franklin.

Then in mid-October, Allar suffered a broken left ankle that required season-ending surgery.

Jets head coach Aaron Glenn is looking for a new quarterback after the Jets’ failure to identify a long-term solution in recent years.

They have already traded away Justin Fields to the Kansas City Chiefs this offseason and replaced him by bringing back Geno Smith in a trade with the Las Vegas Raiders.

But, at 35, Smith is not a viable long-term option and the Jets only have Brady Cook and Bailey Zappe on the quarterback depth chart.

It was also reported earlier this week that the Jets are considering a major pivot as they prepare to pick at No. 2.

It has been assumed in recent weeks that Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey would use their first pick of the draft on Ohio State linebacker Arvell Reese.

But, according to NFL insiders Peter Schrager and Daniel Jeremiah, they are considering selecting Texas Tech edge rusher David Bailey at No. 2 instead.

The Jets believe that Bailey is more ‘pro-ready, polished’ and capable of making the step up to the NFL immediately.

The Jets need any high draft pick to be ready to make an immediate impact, given their horrific 3-14 first season under Glenn last year.
