Revealed: Liverpool’s major-name ‘target for free transfer’ – with situation ‘worsening as time passes’ for £44m-rated star’s club

Liverpool are keeping tabs on a potential deal for a Bundesliga defender as they look to secure his services on a free.

The Reds had a record-breaking summer as they spent well over £300million on the likes of Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak as they look to retain the Premier League title they won last year under Arne Slot.

The likes of Hugo Ekitike and Milos Kerkez also joining, with the club aiming to build on the squad they had that challenged last year in a bid to compete on all fronts, including domestically.

And the Reds are always out for a bargain, too. They came within inches of completing a deal for Marc Guehi’s Crystal Palace on deadline day, but the Eagles pulled the plug on the £35m move.

The reason the fee would have been cheap is because Guehi is out of contract at the end of the season, which would allow him to move for free – and he can negotiate a deal in January with a foreign club.

And it’s the same situation for others who will find themselves to be free agents in the summer – including Dayot Upamecano, who, according to BILD, is of interest to Liverpool.

The Reds remain in the market for a centre back having missed out on signing Guehi at the end of the summer.

They have four senior centre backs on their books including Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate, while Joe Gomez’s future is up in the air after he too nearly changed clubs in the summer.

Konate’s deal is also up next year, and he has been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid.

Giovanni Leoni, meanwhile, who joined the Reds in the window, has suffered an ACL injury.

It mean Liverpool could have to go hard in the market sooner or later, and Upamecano is said to have attracted interest despite being a regular at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga.

There have been talks over a new contract, but nothing has yet been agreed and time is running out for a deal to be done before negotiations can start with foreign clubs.

A new round of discussions are said to be in place to take place soon.

Real Madrid are also thought to be among the potential suitors for the 26-year-old if he does look to jump ship.

Upamecano has played played six times this season in the heart of Bayern’s defence.

Having joined from Leipzig in 2021, he has played nearly 200 times for the German champions and is valued at around £44m.

According to The Mirror, it has emerged that Geuhi could prefer a move to a different European giant to Liverpool – one that has been quite the nemesis of the Reds in recent times.

He too is monitoring a potential move to Madrid, which suggests the Reds and Los Blancos could be butting heads to sign centre backs in the upcoming transfer window,
