  • Emma Raducanu plays in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open on Wednesday
  • Her opponent is the world’s richest tennis star who has a family worth of £7.7bn
  • The player in question also reached her first Grand Slam final in late 2024

Emma Raducanu will feature in the quarter-finals of the Miami Open on Wednesday evening after defeating 17th seed Amanda Anisimova in the last-16.

It marked the first time since her US Open win in 2021 that Raducanu won four WTA main-draw matches in a row.

Raducanu’s opponent in her maiden WTA 1000 quarter-final will be the world’s richest tennis star, who is worth more than Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal all put together.

The player in question has a staggering family worth of a whopping £7.7billion and reached a Grand Slam final in 2024.

That is none other than 31-year-old Jessica Pegula, who is the daughter of oil and gas tycoon Terry Pegula.

Jessica’s father is the president of both the Buffalo Bills NFL team and the Buffalo Sabres NHL side.

In 1983, he founded natural gas company after being given $7,500 by family and friends.

After the company made large profits by employing fracking techniques, Pegula sold the Pennsylvania, New York, and Rocky Mountain branches of the company to Royal Dutch Shell for around $4.7 billion.

He subsequently sold the Ohio and West Virginia assets of the company to American Energy Partners, LP for $1.75 billion in 2014.

He is also the owner of Greater Rocky Mountain Regional Oil & Gas in Colorado and Wyoming and JKLM Energy in Pennsylvania.

Thanks to her father’s wealth, Jessica has also been able to explore business ventures of her own outside of tennis.

In 2016, she and her sister Kelly opened a restaurant called Healthy Scratch in LECOM Harborcenter, in Buffalo, New York.

But another of her ventures that opened in 2017, Healthy Scratch food trucks, were forced to close entirely by 2022 due to being set back by the coronavirus pandemic.

Jessica also owns her own skincare brand, which is named Ready 24.

Reaching as high as number three in the world in the world in 2022, Pegula has cemented herself as one of the top players in the women’s game.

Although she is yet to win a Grand Slam title, she did reach the final of the US Open last year only to lose out to Aryna Sabalenka in straight sets.

She will look to add to her three WTA 1000 titles with a victory against Raducanu on Wednesday – but the ultimate aim for Pegula is to secure a first-ever Grand Slam title.
