  • Thief left empty-handed this week in Brisbane’s north

A would-be criminal has been caught on camera attempting to ram raid the headquarters of a leading Aussie V8 Supercars team.

Supercars legend Jamie Whincup revealed the man’s car crashed into Triple Eight Racing’s Banyo headquarters in Brisbane — and his subsequent escape from the scene.

The team received a 3:30am phone call from police this week declaring ‘you might be the victim of a ram raid’, according to Apex Hunters United.

The page, run by Triple Eight’s endurance co-driver Scott Pye, shared vision of Whincup standing in front of the damaged Nissan SUV.

Whincup saw the funny side of the incident as he walked through the incident on social media.

‘Welcome back to Triple Eight TV — never a dull moment here at 40 Depot St,’ Whincup said in an Instagram post.

‘Old mate’s come up the street, hasn’t realised there’s a right angle at the end of Depot, flies straight through the fence.

‘Done an unbelievable job to miss the pylon sign and the fire hydrant.’

The pole to protect the building is a recent addition at Banyo, Seven News reported.

CCTV footage showed the Nissan drive at high speed before striking the building.

The man then exited the car through the passenger side and fled on foot, with Whincup showing off the damage.

Ultimately, the team principal for Triple Eight and four-time Bathurst 1000 winner was relieved nothing was stolen.

‘Quality driving. Anyway, just did a runner, up the street, gone. Happy days,’ Whincup added.

Triple Eight’s Supercars equipment is currently on its way back to Australia following the historic New Zealand double-header last weekend, where superstar driver Broc Feeney claimed the coveted Jason Richards Memorial Trophy.
