  • Alexander-Arnold is set to depart Liverpool this summer once his contract ends
  • He will join Real Madrid  and Dani Carvajal says he welcomes the competition

Real Madrid defender Dani Carvajal says he’s prepared to welcome the challenge of competing with Trent Alexander-Arnold at the Bernabeu next season.

Alexander-Arnold, 26, announced earlier this month that he would indeed be leaving Liverpool at the end of the season , bringing an end to a near season-long saga and confirming the worst-kept secret in football.

The England international is expected to join Real Madrid in the summer, with Los Blancos hopeful of signing him early for the Club World Cup.

And Carvajal has seemingly confirmed the transfer after claiming he’s motivated by the heightened battle for a spot in the lineup.

The Spaniard told reporters: ‘Competition with Trent Alexander-Arnold? That’s clear, it hasn’t been made official yet, but it seems so. There’s no talk of fear here; we’ll be teammates.

‘Competition improves both of us and brings out the best in each of us.’

Liverpool have not taken well to Alexander-Arnold’s pending departure as they booed him during the 2-2 draw with Arsenal last week.

He was left on the bench for Liverpool’s 3-2 defeat at Brighton on Monday night and looked forlorn at full-time – even though fans partied in the away end.

Meanwhile, Real Madrid have also announced the signing of Bournemouth defender Dean Huijsen after triggering his £50million release clause.

Asked about his compatriot, Carvajal added: ‘We haven’t spoken to him yet; he had a game today… He’s a great signing and a good player . We welcome him, and he’s going to help us a lot.’

Liverpool are set to replace Alexander-Arnold with Bayer Leverkusen’s Jeremie Frimpong, who has agreed a five-year deal with the Reds but they still need to activate his £29.5million release clause and announce the completion of his medical.

Slot was asked after the loss to Brighton if Frimpong had undergone a medical, replying: ‘What do you think?

‘I think what we all know is the moment we announce it, that is the moment to talk about it in general. We haven’t announced anything so no need to talk about anyone.’

Liverpool also also remain keen on Bournemouth left-back Milos Kerkez and a centre back after missing out on his club mate Huijsen
