Railway arches in the shadow of a major city centre station could be revitalised as part of a £1.7bn regeneration plan, developers have said.
Bruntwood SciTech said the Grade II-listed arches along Altrincham Street – off London Road by Manchester Piccadilly station – could be transformed into retail, leisure and community hubs.
The proposals also include office space being created in two new tower blocks, measuring 12 and 20 storeys high, while parts of the surrounding area could be pedestrianised.
Development director Sam Darby said the “ambitious” plans were “also sensitive to the area and its heritage”.

A consultation has been launched on the plans, which are part of a wider £1.7bn effort to revitalise the area between Piccadilly and Oxford Road.
The joint venture between Bruntwood SciTech and the University of Manchester involves the redevelopment of the university’s former north campus and a former site of the University of Manchester Institute of Science and Technology.
The developers said more than 4,000 jobs could be created as a result of the project.

Other proposals include the construction of three new student tower blocks to replace a multi-storey car park, and the conversion of several university buildings – including the already-closed grade-II listed Sackville Building – into offices.
The consultation is open until 9 March.
