A delivery driver whose quick-thinking helped save an 81-year-old customer’s life has been praised as “competent beyond his years”.

Joe, 19, from St Helens said he had a “bad feeling” when Thomas failed to answer the door at his home in Warrington for a scheduled grocery drop-off.

The Asda worker immediately contacted his son Julian so he could enter the property, and called for paramedics when he found Thomas had fallen down the stairs.

“Joe was fantastic and I believe he saved my dad’s life, I am truly blown away by his concern,” Julian said.

The delivery driver told Radio Manchester he knew the man and his wife to be vulnerable as his partner had been a carer in the area who had looked after the couple.

Joe said customers regularly do not answer the door, but he “had a bad feeling something was off.

He rang the contact number for the supermarket order, reached the man’s son and arranged within minutes to get into the house where he found Thomas in a “pretty bad” condition.

Paramedics were called to take him to hospital and Thomas has now returned home to recover, his son Julian said.

Joe said: “I hope that most of the people I know would have done the same thing. I just did what I thought was right.”

The delivery driver stayed with Thomas until he was taken to hospital and continued to ask about his condition, which “shows what a remarkable individual he is,” Julian said.

“I can’t say enough good words about him, and I feel Joe deserves all the recognition”.
