Frozen blueberries sold in Publix stores across several states have been recalled after 12 people fell ill with E. coli.

The recalled blueberries were sold at Publix stores in Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia.

Publix shoppers should check their freezers for GreenWise Organic IQF Blueberries after the Chile-based company behind the product, Frutas y Hortalizas del Sur S.A., issued a recall Friday.

The company warned in an announcement published by the Food and Drug Administration that the blueberries may be contaminated with E. coli, bacteria that can make people sick with severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting.

Most healthy people infected with E. coli recover within a week, but some experience a serious complication called hemolytic uremic syndrome, the recall announcement warned.

Young children, older adults and those with weakened immune systems are more at risk for hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can lead to kidney failure and even death, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

At least 12 confirmed cases of stomach illness linked to E. coli were reported by customers between May 11 and June 5, the Chile-based company said in its announcement.

“After receiving reports of consumers experiencing digestive illnesses and having consumed GreenWise frozen blueberries as part of their diet, Frutas y Hortalizas S.A. has decided to initiate the recall,” the announcement read.

Customers who have the 10-ounce bag of the frozen blueberries with a best-by date of February 9, 2028, and a lot code of 60401 are advised not to eat them.

The recalled blueberries should be thrown away or returned to the store where they were purchased for a full refund, the company said.

“Food safety remains a top priority for Frutas y Hortalizas S.A.,” the announcement read. “The company is committed to protecting consumers and is conducting a thorough investigation into the source of the presumptive finding.”

The company is working with regulators on the recall and has instructed customers who received the blueberries to stop disturbing them and notify anyone further down the supply chain who may have received the affected product.

Customers with questions about the recall can call 336-899-5612 or email [email protected].
