PSG manager Luis Enrique rushed to hospital for emergency surgery after cycling accident

Paris Saint-Germain manager Luis Enrique has been taken to hospital for emergency surgery after being involved in a cycling accident on Friday.

The 55-year-old Spaniard suffered a fractured collarbone in the incident and required treatment from emergency services at the scene before being transferred to hospital for an operation.

In a statement released on Friday evening, his club wrote: ‘Following a cycling accident on Friday, Paris Saint-Germain head coach Luis Enrique was treated by the emergency services and will undergo surgery for a fractured collarbone.

‘The club expresses its full support and wishes him a swift recovery. Further updates will be shared in due course.’

Enrique’s setback comes just over a week before PSG return to action following the international break. They are due to face Lens in Ligue 1 on September 14 before beginning their Champions League title defence against Atalanta three days later.

It is unclear at this stage whether Enrique will be on the touchline for either game. Recovery from a fractured collarbone can typically take six to eight weeks, with patients often required to wear a sling for several weeks after surgery before starting a rehabilitation programme.

Enrique, who took charge at the Parc des Princes in the summer of 2023, has enjoyed huge success in Paris. He has delivered back-to-back Ligue 1 titles and French Cups, and last season guided PSG to their first ever Champions League crown, demolishing Inter Milan 5-0 in the final in Munich. The club also reached the final of the inaugural FIFA Club World Cup this summer, eventually losing to Chelsea.

That Champions League triumph was a particularly emotional moment for Enrique. PSG fans unveiled a giant tifo in the stands of the Allianz Arena paying tribute to his late daughter Xana, who died of bone cancer in 2019 at the age of nine. She had celebrated with him on the pitch when he won the Champions League with Barcelona in 2015, carrying a huge flag in Berlin.

Speaking after the final in May, Enrique said: ‘I’m very happy. It was very emotional at the end with the banner from the fans for my family. But I always think about my daughter. My daughter is always with us, especially when we lost. With my family, enjoying everything and trying to get the positives, even in the bad moments.’

The former Spain and Barcelona boss has enjoyed a glittering coaching career after a distinguished playing spell with Sporting Gijon, Real Madrid and Barcelona. As a manager he has lifted numerous trophies, including the Champions League as part of a famous treble with Barcelona in 2015, while also leading Spain to the semi-finals of Euro 2020.

PSG have begun this season strongly with three wins from three in Ligue 1, after beating Tottenham on penalties in the UEFA Super Cup final.
