Ban on the supply and sale of wet wipes containing plastic
The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) is introducing new rules banning the sale and supply of wet wipes containing plastic. There will be limited exemptions for business-to-business transactions and medical use.
This is part of a UK-wide strategy to tackle plastic pollution, with each nation introducing its own legislation.
The ban focuses on consumer products, where plastic-free alternatives are already available. The goal is to cut plastic and microplastic pollution, reduce landfill and incineration waste, and lessen the impact of litter on marine life and animal health.
The ban will take effect in May 2027, after an 18-month transition period to allow retailers to clear existing stock and adopt alternatives. Many plastic-free options are already on the market.
This initiative supports DAERA’s commitment to reducing plastic pollution under the Northern Ireland Environmental Improvement Plan.
