Premier League-winning manager emerges as surprise candidate for Nottingham Forest job with Sean Dyche in contention after Ange Postecoglou’s sacking

Former Burnley and Everton boss Sean Dyche is one of the names under consideration to replace Ange Postecoglou at Nottingham Forest.

The Australian was sacked just 18 minutes after Nottingham Forest’s home defeat by Chelsea to bring a brutal end to the shortest permanent managerial tenure in Premier League history.

Postecoglou was told by a senior official, not thought to be owner Evangelos Marinakis, shortly after full-time that he had been dismissed after just 39 days in charge. Forest hope to have a permanent replacement in time for Thursday’s Europa League clash with Porto at the City Ground.

They may look to appoint a successor until the end of the season and Dyche is one of the managers they have considered, though whether the former Burnley and Everton boss would accept such a short-term arrangement.

The 54-year-old may need a longer deal to be persuaded, although he lives in Nottingham and was a youth-team player at Forest in the late-1980s, when Brian Clough was manager. However, he never made a first-team appearance.

Marinakis has long admired Fulham boss Marco Silva, who worked for him at Olympiacos in 2015-16.

The issue with Silva is the huge compensation clause in his contract, which expires at the end of the season. Would Forest pay a high sum now for a manager who will be a free agent by the end of June?

A surprising name linked to the vacant job at the City Ground is former Manchester City head coach Roberto Mancini, who has been without a managerial job since leaving Saudi Arabia just under a year ago.

Daily Mail Sport understand the 60-year-old, who has also coached the likes of Inter Milan, Zenit Saint Petersburg, Italy and Galatasaray, is among the candidates being discussed by the club.

There have also been suggestions that Pedro Martins, who was at Olympiacos for four years under Marinakis, could come into the reckoning. Martins is currently in charge of Al-Gharafa in the Qatar Stars League.

Marinakis has never paid compensation for a manager during his time at Forest yet it is thought that this time, he would be willing do so – though like all clubs, Forest must ensure they stay within Premier League and European spending rules.

The writing has been on the wall for Postecoglou since the home defeat by Midtjylland in the Europa League on October 2. The following day, Daily Mail Sport revealed that Forest would review Postecoglou’s position during the international break.

The Australian survived that fortnight, more because Forest could not agree terms with a suitable candidate. But the Chelsea result proved fatal, and the signs were there when Marinakis left his seat in the Peter Taylor stand after an hour.

When he was informed, Postecoglou is said to have taken the news graciously. Before departing, he bid goodbye to his squad and wished them good luck.

Soon before he was sacked, he stood alone on the pitch, applauding nobody in particular. It felt as though he knew then what was coming.

It was a far more combative Postecoglou who addressed the media on Friday, repeating that he always wins a trophy in his second season and that his time in England had been judged unfairly. After this disastrous stint, it will be very difficult for him to keep making that argument.
