49ers quarterback Mac Jones reportedly saw a dead body floating in the water outside his team hotel – just hours before leading his team to a win over the Rams.

Jones was staying in Marina del Rey when he spotted the body from his balcony, according to The Athletic, before quickly alerting his teammates.

Someone on the team called police and, as the 49ers boarded buses for SoFi Stadium, players saw investigators and a coroner’s van pull into the marina.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said on Friday the case was still under investigation. No other details were released have been released as of yet.

Despite the harrowing ordeal earlier in the day, Jones put in a stellar performance to help the 49ers beat the Rams on Thursday night.

Filling in for the injured Brocky Purdy on Thursday night, Jones completed 33 of his 49 passes for 342 yards, two touchdowns and zero interceptions in a 26-23 win.

The 26-year-old battled cramps in both legs and arms in the game, vomited on the sideline and was given three bananas to keep him going, according to reports.

Meanwhile Purdy, who signed a five-year, $265million contract extension with the team earlier this year, has been the starter in San Francisco ever since his breakout season back in 2023.

Following Jones’ superb outing on Thursday , and the fact that Purdy threw two interceptions in last week’s miserable loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars, fans believe the big-money quarterback may be out of a job by the time he returns from injury.

Despite fans clamoring for him to remain starter, Jones insisted after the game that he is still very much understudy to Purdy in San Francisco.

‘They brought me here to play as a backup and that’s my job,’ he told reporters.

‘Brock’s the starter of this team, and right now he’s dealing with something, and for him to go out there last week and play when you know he probably wasn’t at full health, he cares about this team. So, I’m just trying to get some wins for him so it helps us down the line, and at the end of the day, that’s what it’s all about.

‘I’ve been in his position, I’ve been a starter, and you want your backup to go in there and win, because at the end of the season, that could be the hit or miss between a playoff or not.’

The incident evidently didn’t phase Jones as, after the game against the Rams, head coach Kyle Shanahan was full of praise for the backup QB.

‘He played his a** off, man,’ Shanahan told reporters. ‘He was unbelievable in the first half. He got banged up there in the second half and battled through it.

‘He protected the ball and, going against that defense and throwing the ball that many times, not having a turnover and protecting the ball like he did, I can’t say enough good things about Mac.’

The Daily Mail has reached out to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department and the San Francisco 49ers for comment.
