Greater Manchester Police have launched a weekend crackdown on car meets

Police have announced a crackdown on illegal car meets.

Greater Manchester Police (GMP) have put in place a force-wide dispersal order to break up any events where large numbers of people converge with their vehicles.

The order was put in place from Saturday at 15:30 GMT and will remain in effect 05:00 GMT on Monday.

GMP said it was “aware of several planned car cruise events” and the order would “prevent disorder and keep people safe”.

Ch Insp John Haywood said: “We know that car meets can attract large crowds and, at times, lead to behaviour that puts people at risk.”

He added: “We have seen car gatherings lead to a rise in anti-social and disruptive behaviour in the past and understand the concern that this raises to communities.”

The gatherings see drivers meet on public roads or large car parks to race or show off their vehicles to each other.
