Police are continuing their hunt for the thug who left Aberdeen defender Jack MacKenzie with a serious facial injury after throwing a broken chair on to the Tannadice pitch yesterday.

The visibly-distressed 24-year-old needed lengthy medical treatment following an incident which has shocked Scottish football.

The broken chair was hurled from a section of the ground housing Dons supporters after Dundee United fans had invaded the pitch to celebrate their team’s European qualification following a 2-1 win.

In disgraceful scenes, the missile struck unused substitute MacKenzie, causing a nasty head wound which required stitches. The player was wheeled away on a medical trolley with a bandaged head.

It was just the latest in a spate of shameful incidents of fan disorder which have blighted Scottish football and brought widespread condemnation from across the game.

United boss Jim Goodwin branded the episode an ‘absolute disgrace’, while Aberdeen boss Jimmy Thelin admitted it was ‘totally unacceptable’.

In a strongly-worded statement, the Pittodrie club vowed to take the strongest possible action once the perpetrator is identified.

Police chiefs are continuing to assess CCTV footage and are working with both clubs to find the individual responsible.

They appealed for information in the aftermath and asked anyone who witnessed the incident or has footage to contact them.

However, they confirmed today that no arrests have yet been made nor suspects identified.

Speaking yesterday, match commander Superintendent Ray Birnie described the incident as ‘a mindless act’.
