Pep Guardiola has issued a stark warning to his Manchester City squad, declaring that next weekend’s clash with Arsenal will be rendered irrelevant if they fail to secure victory against Chelsea this Sunday.

The Premier League title race has swung back into City’s favour following leaders Arsenal’s unexpected defeat to Bournemouth on Saturday.

While Mikel Arteta’s side still maintain a nine-point advantage, City now have two games in hand and the opportunity to directly impact Arsenal’s points tally, offering a clear path to draw level.

However, the first of these additional fixtures is a challenging trip to Stamford Bridge, a test Guardiola insists his team must pass.

“Talking about Arsenal, if you don’t win at Stamford Bridge – that’s not an easy place to go – maybe we don’t need to make the press conference before Arsenal because it’ll be over,” the City manager stated emphatically.

“Everybody knows it. You know it, I know it, the players know it, everybody knows it. England knows it.”

With eight games remaining in their campaign, Guardiola believes nothing less than a perfect run-in will suffice to claim the crown.

He stressed: “So, there’s how many games left? You have to win all of them, all. Not one draw, no. Forget about it.”

Having guided City to six Premier League titles during his nearly decade-long tenure, Guardiola acknowledged suggestions of an ‘aura’ surrounding his team that might unsettle rivals.

“Because now we are not seventh or eighth in the Premier League, we are second and fighting,” he remarked. “It’s not a bad season.” Yet, he quickly tempered this, emphasising that experience in high-stakes situations is more crucial than external perceptions.

“The aura doesn’t make you feel wins,” he explained. “For most of the players, not now but in recent past, it’s just, ‘OK, we have done it many times, we can do it again’. But that doesn’t define a season in the Premier League. The season in the Premier League is 11 months and in the 11 months, there were a lot of games that we were good, but not good enough to win.”

City’s historical strength in the latter stages of the season is undeniable, with 28 wins from their last 31 April fixtures.

Guardiola offered a light-hearted explanation for this trend: “When the sun is out in spring time, our souls rise and we feel better. That’s why we win games. That is the reason why this season we were not good, because the weather was not good!”

Reinforcing the team’s collective understanding of the task ahead, goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma also highlighted the critical nature of this weekend’s match.

The Italian said: “It will be a difficult game because going there to play is never easy. We hope to get a great result because it’s very important for us for the title race.”

As the title race intensifies, Manchester City’s immediate focus remains squarely on Chelsea, with Guardiola making it clear that their championship aspirations hinge on a positive result at Stamford Bridge.
