Manchester City are anxiously awaiting the extent of a knee injury sustained by Omar Marmoush while on international duty.

Marmoush was forced off in the opening moments of Egypt’s goalless World Cup qualifier with Burkina Faso on Tuesday night and will miss Sunday’s Manchester derby.

The forward – who has suffered a bruise on the knee ligament, according to the national team doctor – went for further scans in his homeland on Wednesday.

Marmoush arrived in Cairo on crutches and was greeted by Egypt’s minister for youth and sport, Ashraf Sobhy among other dignitaries.

The 26-year-old is flying back to England for further tests and begin rehabilitation, with Pep Guardiola’s plans in the attacking areas now further hampered following Rayan Cherki’s quadricep tear.

Guardiola has revealed that they expect Cherki – a £31million signing from Lyon – to be out until late October.

Phil Foden was described as not fully fit for City’s 2-1 defeat by Brighton before the international break and was not included in Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for wins over Andorra and Serbia. Foden has played 15 minutes of Premier League football so far this campaign.

Savinho is expected to be back in the fold after his summer move to Tottenham failed to materialise, while Jeremy Doku scored twice and recorded an assist during Belgium’s 6-0 thumping of Kazakhstan.
