Patrick Mahomes has admitted for the first time how he was left ‘hurt’ by his father’s DWI arrest before last year’s Super Bowl.

The Kansas City Chiefs quarterback’s preparations for their game against the San Francisco 49ers were thrown into chaos when Mahomes Sr, 55, was arrested eight days before the clash in Las Vegas.

The former MLB pitcher did make it to the Super Bowl the weekend after the incident and saw his son win his third ring, as the Chiefs beat the 49ers 25-22 in overtime.

Speaking about the incident for the first time in new ESPN docuseries ‘The Kingdom’, which airs on August 14, Mahomes said, according to The New York Post: ‘It was during that Super Bowl week. It became a story and so I had to answer questions about it.

‘I think just knowing that it hurt me, woke him up to know that like you can’t keep doing the same things.’

Mahomes Sr also agreed to be interviewed for the program and when asked how he felt about his actions affecting his son, he said: ‘It kind of hit home before the Super Bowl last year, when I got in trouble.

‘For him to have to answer questions about me, you know, was probably the most embarrassing thing that I’ve ever been through in my life.

‘I called him right after. I said, “I’m sorry, I’m sorry that it’s taken away from your time and focus.” I made a vow that he would never have to deal with anything because of drinking because of me. I haven’t had a drink since then.’

Mahomes’ wife Brittany added: ‘I think it finally hit him that, you know, “I have my kids watching me, I have my grandkids now that are watching me”. He really enjoys watching his son play football and live out his dream.’

Footage from the arrest in Tyler, Texas later emerged and showed Mahomes Sr ranting to cops that his arrest would cost his son the Super Bowl.

An officer had seen his white Genesis traveling too slowly as he went west in the 1100 block of W. Gentry. Cops ran his registration – which had expired in September 2022 and he had an open can of beer in the car alongside him when police pulled him over.

‘Are y’all serious?’ Mahomes Sr. can be heard saying: ‘I’m supposed to be going to the Super Bowl to watch my son play football, and this is what we’re doing?

‘Can I say one thing? My son is getting ready to play in the f***ing Super Bowl, OK? Just listen to me. I am not drunk. I promise you. I’ve had some drinks. But he can’t have this right now. Listen, this can’t happen.

‘Dude. This is crazy. My son is getting ready to play in the f***ing Super Bowl and I’m doing interviews — five or six a day. And then, now, this s***’s going to be on the news which is going to f*** with him, and it’s probably going to f*** him up.’

‘And he probably won’t win the Super Bowl. But that’s fine. If that’s what y’all want to do, that’s good.’

Mahomes Sr later received a five-year probation sentence over the incident.

He last played baseball in 2003 for the Pittsburgh Pirates, but in recent times has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons.

He was also arrested for driving while intoxicated in 2008 and 2019, and last year was banned from driving after being found on the roads without a valid license.

Mahomes Sr spent 10 days in jail and has been under ‘intense supervision’ in his first year of probation.
